My Civil Doodie
So a few quick things for my blog. Neglect! I know I know.....
First lets talk jury duty. Yes, I got called and yes I had to serve on a trial. Although work only paid for 75% of it, Im still glad I served.
To give you a quick overview of the trail (because I can now talk about it), You have a 78 year old man who has worked his whole life as an iron worker and pipe fitter. He started working at 15, smoked, and ended up with asbestosis (I know, not the most exciting trial).
The company he was suing was a contracting company for a site he worked at in Southern California. He didnt work for them however it was established they were a contracting company that would rip out the other sides of the pipes he was fitting and were around most of the time he was in Southern California. This was mostly during the 60s when there was no Osha and wasnt any federal regulations for asbestos.
I for one said they werent neglegent for his asbestosis but the rest of the jury (except for one woman) said they were. Their reasoning was that the defendent didnt present any evidence or witnesses. They didnt try and say they werent there. They just let the plaintiff make his case. For me lack of evidence doesnt mean they are guilty but for the rest of the jury, the company was there and they contributed 25% of his asbestosis to the defendent. They awarded him 2.5 million which the company would be liable for 25%. I hate lawsuits like this.
Of course the jury was cool and made up of lots of younger people. Several gay and lots of men. I had one who seemed pretty persistant about exchanging phone numbers. I avoided him like the plaque.
This weekend is the SF Leather Daddys boy contest. I promised spunky who is the current title holder I would run for the title. Im a bit nervous since I dont usually like letting the walls down and letting people truly see inside and theres a huge part of me thats afraid. Like all fears, the best way to conquer them is to face them and live it out. I plan on being one of those people who just has fun with it, win or lose. I know several who are entering who are probably much more deserving since they do so much more for the community.
On a final note its Tuesday, August 29th and my friend Jason from Rochester is moving here today. Im really excited to have another Rochester person moving to San Francisco. We will head out for drinks tonight and it will be great to catch up.
More to come
